Untreated cotton jersey can lose three to five percent of its length in the first hot wash. On a t-shirt that is most of an inch, which is the difference between a fit that works and one that does not.
Bio-washing and compaction take that movement out before the garment is cut, so the measurement on the size chart is the measurement you keep.
It costs more per piece and adds days to the run. We think it is the difference between a garment you wear for two seasons and one you wear for five.
It is also why our size chart quotes flat measurements rather than vague labels — you can lay a shirt you already own on a table and compare directly.
